Lot Essay

Compare the current lot with a complete set of twelve Famille rose cups, decorated with the 'flowers of the season', from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Porcelain with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 1999, pp.236-239, pl.211.
The cups from the Museum, dated from the Daoguang period, bear Chinese characters inside and each one has a specific number from one to twelve. Despite this small difference, the cup number three with peonies and the cup number six with lotus look very much alike the present lot.
