THOREAU, Henry David (1817-1862). A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. Boston and Cambridge: James Munroe; New York: George P. Putnam; Philadelphia: Lindsay and Blackiston; London: John Chapman, 1849.
8o. 1-page advertisement for Walden at end. Early 20th century green morocco gilt, spine gilt, top edge gilt, original cloth bound-in, by P.B. Sanford (some wear at joints). Provenance: R.B. Adam (1863-1940), noted collector of books and manuscripts by Samuel Johnson and his circle (bookplate, given to); Tom Moseley (gift inscription from R.B. Adam on front flyleaf); William F. Gable (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, FIRST ISSUE OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK WITH AN AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED BY THOREAU tipped-in to the verso of the front free endpaper: "If Carnac's columns still stand on the plain To enjoy our opportunities they remain. Henry D. Thoreau." These are the final two lines of the sonnet on page 266. 1,000 sets of sheets of A Week were printed at Thoreau's expense in 1849. However, the book did not sell well, and on October 28, 1853, 706 copies were sent back to Thoreau where they would sit in his attic bedroom for the next nine years. Ticknor and Fields eventually bought the remaining bound copies and unbound sheets in 1862 for 40 cents a piece. BAL 20104; Borst A1.1.a1; Johnson High Spots 73.
