8o (208 x 132 mm). Half-title, 52 pages. 38 engraved maps on 22 sheets (some pale spotting). Modern buckram. Provenance: Henry L. Janeway (typed letter dated 1903 presenting the book to A.J. Cassatt, President of the Pennsylvania Railroad, mounted on front pastedown; his document dated 1903 forwarding to the Secretary tipped to front free endpaper); Pennsylvania Railroad Company (blindstamp on title and several text leaves).
FIRST EDITION. The text opens with a geographical and historical portrait of Philadelphia, which includes many references to the important landmark buildings in the city, including the Philosophical Society, the Philadelphia Library, the University and the Peale Museum. The guide proceeds outside Philadelphia and describes the towns and villages along the roads to Washington. A similar description of Washington is given, and includes notes on the Capitol and the President's house. Howes M-778 ("one of the earliest guides"); Sabin 50436; Streeter sale VII:3969. VERY RARE.
