Lot Essay

Rudi's paintings are realistic, but with surrealistic tendencies by their proportions, colours or surroundings, bringing a sense of mystery and obscurity to his work. Lot 2 and 3 are both from the artist's white on white series which touches on the theme of the individual versus the masses. As it is literally suggested, Rudi applies shades of white in varying gradations which are imposed on the canvas and super-imposed on one another, thus creating a subtle imagery which conveys a message or theme. In Lot 2, the row upon row of houses is seemingly identical and mass oriented, but when you take a closer look at each individual house, they are all different and unique in their own way.

In the second lot, a pale blue is introduced into the palette of white, which helps to bring out the colour without overshadowing the pale and translucent quality which the artist has so masterfully painted. This piece is constructed with such simple, soft lines and yet the image conjured is effective enough to leave a fierce impression on the viewer.
