A rare South American tortoise shell and silver-mounted casket
Apparently unmarked, possibly Peru, 17th century
Rectangular, the front finely engraved with two lions, the sides each with bird, the back with winged cherub, inside the hinged cover inscribed: 'CDEMIERANcaXIMEANE3' and larger 'IHS' under tied ribbon and the crowned monogram MA or AM conjoined, the outside cover engraved with winged dragon chasing a deer and squirrel, fleur de lis shaped corner mounted, plain hinged lockplate
