Lot Essay

An identical pair of candlesticks by Pieter de Keen dated 1729 is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. See Jan Rudolph de Lorm, Amsterdams Goud en Zilver, Zwolle, 1999, p. 92, no. 42, illustrated.

Pieter de Keen is considered, already by his fellow silversmiths, as one of the best craftsman of his time. In 1704 he was listed in a selection of de meest gequalificeerde silversmits which was compiled by the burgemeesters en schepen for the register of goede mannen. (Op. cit. p. 92. no. 42.).
