The lavender-blue-ground octagonal body with mandarins and their servants at various pursuits, with a servant holding a flywhisk, one holding an umbrella, a warrior on horseback, the lower part with lappets, the neck with stiff leaves, comprising: a pair of balustroid onion-necked vases, 64.7 cm. high, a balustroid vase and cover, 64.7 cm. high (various repairs) (4)

Lot Essay

It was highly fashionable to adorn cupboards or chimneys, depending on the seasons, with all sorts of Chinese porcelain vases. When imports of Chinese porcelain virtually ceased in 1647, Delft soon filled the gap in the market. So began the garniture cult, which from 1670 to around 1800 was an integral part of the Dutch interior.
