Lot Essay

These micromosaic roundels each inlaid with a different butterfly are related to the butterfly roundels on a gueridon table by Francesco Belloni (1772-1844) and Jacob Frères with marble and micromosaic top. This gueridon with Perrin is illustrated in his catalogue of 2006, p. 142-147. Francesco Belloni was a specialist in pietra dura and micromosaic, whose Laboratorio di Mosaico was originally based in Rome. In 1798, he moved to Paris, where he is first recorded in 1802 in the rue de l'Université. His workshop was granted the title of Ecole Impériale de Mosaique by Napoleon in 1809.
