The original Narcissus was discovered in August 1862 in a Pompeian house, now in the Museo Nazionale. It was the last antique statue to be discovered in Italy which enjoyed enormous fame. See also F. Haskell/N.Penny, Taste and the Antique, London, 1981, pl. 64.
