Lot Essay

The original Mercury was discovered on 3 August 1758 at Herculaneum in the peristyle of the villa dei Papiri. It was probably the most celebrated work of art discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii in the eighteenth century. See also F. Haskell/N. Penny, Taste and the Antique, London, 1981, pl. 62.
