Lot Essay

This type of corner cupboard took in an essential role in the Amelander interior. It was decorated with monumental painted scenes from the Old Testament or it had a mythological or classical subject. These cupboards were also found in Westfriesland and the Zaanstraak and it is therefore not certain that all these cupboards were solely conceived in Ameland. (Tj.W.R. de Haan, Volkskunst der Lage Landen, de wooncultuur/schepen, Amsterdam/Brussel, 1965, p. 84).
