Lot Essay

The Assendelfter or Zaanse cupboard is a polychrome-painted four-door cupboard, which is characterized by its open compartment between the upper and lower doors. This open space, which was used for storage of domestic earthenware, is adjoined to the upper side by a dentiled arch. Unfortunately the arch of this cupboard is lacking. The doors depict biblical scenes, the drawer and the frieze depict hunting scenes and the uprights are decorated with floral tendrils with birds and grapes.
