Lot Essay

Table cabinets with similar architectural arangements, variously decorated with painted panels; applied silver- or metalwork; or a combination of both belonged to the Antwerp repertoire of the mid to third quarter of the 17th Century. They were conceived as conversation pieces, un-asuming on the outside, but once opened reveiling a varied and richly decorated interior.
A related cabinet of similar outline is illustrated in, R. Fabri, Zuid-Nederlandse pronkmeubels, 16e-18e eeuw (Brussel, 1989), p. 137.
