Lot Essay

This is one of two posters designed by Man Ray for London Underground, the other features the same image but is titled 'London Transport'. It is thought that Man Ray designed this pair poster while on a visit from Paris; "Like Schleger he took the familiar bar and circle symbol as his starting point and translated it into an unfamiliar context" (Underground Art, p.77)
