Lot Essay

Hald's training in the studio of Henri Matisse is clearly revealed in the stylistic energy of this design.
The vase was an immediate critical success, and was considerd by many to be a leitmotif of Hald's early work through its transposition of modern subject upon neoclassical form. The design has been added to the permanent collection of numerous museums, to include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Rohsska Museum in Gothenburg, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, which acquired an example in 1938.
