Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the artist.
Bengt Lindström's use of pure colour and thick, almost sculptural use of paint, elevates the sagas of the North to the contemporary viewer, merging art and fantasy to shape his at once disturbing and vivacious vision of the world. It was important for Lindström to engage with his Nordic heritage and the rooster like creature in this painting, erect against a bright blue sky like a colourful and spiky cactus, has mythological relevance. It is likely to be a representation of Gullinkambi, a golden rooster who according to Norse beliefs would alert the Gods when Ragnarok, the inescapable battle at the end of the world, was near. Its feathers stretched out like two enormous hands, revealing excitement and danger, Lindström's rooster evoke such apocalyptic dimensions.
