Lot Essay

The defining characteristic of Finnish glass during the late 1940s and early 1950s was a respectful interpretation of nature and the Finnish landscape. The highly abstracted forms created by Sarpaneva and Wirkkala sought inspiration from the effects of moving water, ice, or fungi, and contributed substantially to the promotion of the Finnish national identity.
