Lot Essay

These two sheets are from an album of at least 55 drawings by Fontebasso which was broken up before 1920. The drawings from the group are easily identified as they are all drawn on ledger paper with vertical ruled lines in black chalk running down the margins. Other pages from the album are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (J. Bean and W. Griswold, Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1990, no. 47), Princeton, the British Museum, the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Uffizi and in San Francisco.
