Lot Essay

Similar in handling and size to a number of chalk drawings from a sketchbook used by Robert in Italy in 1754-65, formerly in the collection of the Marquis de Ganay and dismembered at Sotheby's, Monaco, 1 December 1989, lots 2-68. Fifty such albums are listed in Robert's posthumous sale, of which only two, at the Louvre and the Pierpont Morgan Library, now survive intact.
