Lot Essay

Patricia Preece, born in 1900, was a student at the Slade and had been a pupil of André L'hote in Paris. Preece met Spencer in a teashop in Cookham in 1929, where she had been living with the painter Dorothy Hepworth, and the couple married in 1937. Within a few days of the wedding, Spencer had committed adultery with his divorced wife Hilda. Both Hilda and Patricia were frequent subjects for Spencer.
