Lot Essay

From 1916 to 1918 Lewis served on the Western Front as a battery officer. In 1919 he revived Vorticism under the group title Group X and held a show at the Mansard Gallery, where five works were shown, four of them drawings. In 1920, the year of the present example, Lewis's 'life drawings show frequent use of sharp conté crayon' (C. Handley-Read [ed.), The Art of Wyndham Lewis, London, 1951, p. 54). London Cabby was executed in London's glittering bevy of post-war renaissance.
