The locomotive depicted in the foreground is a BR ex-LMS 'Black Five' mixed traffic 4-6-0, designed by Sir William Stanier and built from 1935-1944.

Terence Cuneo himself explains the reason behind the unusually emotive title of the painting Memories of Willesden Junction in a note written by him in a book as 'with cylinders cocks open and roaring, an LMS 'Black Five' begins to move out. I refer to this picture as a memory, as it was here, in the summer of 1937, that I used to drive steam engines (unofficially of course!).'

We would like to thank Carole Cuneo for her assistance in cataloging this lot.
