Ottery St. Mary is considered to be the finest church in Devon other than Exeter Cathedral, upon which it was closely modelled by Bishop Grandisson when he greatly enlarged and beautified the existing 13th century church for his college of canons in the 14th century. The church was added to circa 1520 by the Dorset Aisle, and restored in 1849-50.
