David Oxtoby's great interest was popular music of the 1950s-1970s. He has used Blues and Rock artists as his subject matter for the last forty years. The present work was painted at the time when Charles was voted best male singer by jazz critics in Downbeat magazine. His work is held in numerous collections including the Tate Gallery and Museum of Modern Art in New York. The offering of this work provides a rare opportunity to acquire an early example by Oxtoby.
