The brooch was originally part of a tiara created by Charles de Temple to be worn by the winner of a competition run by Du Pont in 1968 to find "Lady Cantrece - the girl with the million dollar legs". The competition was won by Nina Scott, a professional beauty queen; her legs were insured by Du Pont for $1,000,000. The brooch formed the detachable centrepiece of the tiara and was part of the prize. Nina Scott was at various times also Miss Sheffield, Miss Blackpool and was placed third in Miss U.K.
