A LARGE EARLY 19TH CENTURY INDIAN COLONIAL SILVER TABLE SNUFF BOX,
MARK OF PITTAR & CO., CALCUTTA, CIRCA 1835,
Oblong with bevelled sides, the cover engraved with a view of a fort on a hill overlooking the shore with ships at sea in the foreground, the raised border chased with scrolls & flowers, the rim of base at front inscribed "Pittar & Co., Old Court House St.t, Calcutta", 5 3/8 in. long x 4 in. wide x 1½ in. high ( 13.6 cm. x 10 cm. x 4 cm.), 17.5 oz.

The engraved scene is believed to be of a Chinese port, possibly Macao. For similar scenes of Chinese ports painted by China Trade artists see "The Decorative Arts of the China Trade" by Carl L. Crossman, Antique Collectors' Club, 1991 & 1997, Ps. 410-419.
