A Cantonese ivory puzzle ball, early 19th century
the largest concentric pierced ball carved with figures engaged in leisurely pursuits amidst trees and pavilions, containing balls pierced with a geometric pattern, surmounted by a carved figure group comprising a lady holding a vase and a boy carrying a package tied to a strap over his shoulder standing below a pine tree and suspended from a chain terminating in a mythical fish, supported on a splayed base carved and pierced with peach and pomegranate, with a silk tassle -- the ivory 15½in. (39.3cm.) long.
