Lot Essay

John Gee (d.circa 1824), became partner to Benjamin Crompton, 'Turner in ordinary to George III' around 1779. Gee was sworn in with his partner Thomas Aycliffe in 1787 but is only listed as 'Chairmaker and Turner to his Majesty' at 49 Wardour Street, Soho from 1779. Few of his commissions are recorded but a number of chairs with his stamp are found, often accompanied by stamped initials which it is assumed have been struck by his journeymen. Two chairs by Gee of a similar design, although with different arms, are illustrated in C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pp.219, figs.381-382.
