Following his stay in the Andreevskaya Sanatorium, near the village of Aksenovo during the summer of 1901, he now describes his experience and advises his acquaintance on expenses ('the koumiss costs extra') and arrangements, 'You need to take with you sheets, a pillow, a warm overcoat, galoshes, and umbrella and a plaid, which will serve as a blanket'.

Chekhov was by 1904 terminally ill with tuberculosis, dying in July at a German spa in Badenweiler.
