An early draft of the short story published with the title Le forban mon ami in the Contes de bord (Paris, 1833), including variants, particularly the changing of the name of the hero from 'Mathias' to 'Mainfroy'; later he is rediscovered as Captain Manfredo, one of the great corsairs of the Brazilian fleet. The tale concludes with their last encounter, when, pursued by Manfredo, the narrator at last takes advantage of a stronger wind: 'mais il ne me quitta qu'en m'envoyant trois coups de canon dont les boulets allèrent tomber à quelques cents bras de moi. Ce furent là les derniers adieux de mon ami Le Pirate.'

Edouard Corbière, who spent most of his life in Brittany, was the pioneer of French maritime fiction, and father of the poet Tristan Corbière.
