Details
GIDE, André (1869-1951). Two autograph letters signed, one to [Eugène] Rouart,n.p., 25 April [1915], 4 pages, 8vo; one to an unidentified correspondent ('Mon ami'), n.p [Paris], n.d. [1900], one page, 8vo; an autograph postcard signed to 'Jacques des Fachous' on a printing matter (1898), and an autograph note signed on a small card.
The letter to Rouart refers to one he has received from his wife to which he can only reply with vague information, although reassuringly. Gide adds details of his recent social activities and the friends he has seen, also mentioning that he is joining the auxiliary services and 'tout le jour et tous les jours je suis bouclé au Foyer Franco-Belge'. The second letter explains that he is out in the morning, but his friend will find him with his wife later, in front of 'le pavillon de l'Allemagne, façade donnant sur la Seine' [presumably during the Exposition universelle in 1900] and they will lunch together.
Gide enjoyed a long-standing friendship with Eugène Rouart, the son of Degas' close friend, the wealthy painter and art collector Henri Rouart. It was while visiting Eugène in the country that he met the young man who was the inspiration for Si le grain ne meurt (1926). (4)
