LARBAUD, Valéry (1881-1957). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent (a publisher), Alicante, 14 June 1920, 'Je suis en train de corriger les épreuves d'Erewhon. Vous savez que Gaston doit me faire envoyer des secondes épreuves ... celles-ci sont pleines de fautes'; Larbaud adds addresses in Madrid and in Sicily to whom publications are to be sent, and refers to the unsatisfactory brochages [stitching] of Les Enfantines [1918], 3 pages, 8vo; and an autograph manuscript ('traduit par M.V.L.'), transcribing and translating into French S.T. Coleridge's comments on Sir Thomas Browne, including cancellations and corrections, on lined paper, 5 pages, 4to.
Larbaud, fluent in several languages, was a pioneer in promoting the knowledge of foreign literature in France and translated a number of works himself including, at the age of twenty, Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. (2)
