MÖRIKE, Eduard (1804-1875). Autograph manuscript (unsigned), [Cleversulzbach, October 1837], a poem, 'Agnes geht dreimal um die Mausfalle und spricht' ['Mausfallen-Sprüchlein'], title and 14 lines on one page, 8vo (minor discolouration), tipped onto paper. Provenance. Two letters by the Mörike expert Hanns Wolfgang Rath, 6 and 21 May 1927, discuss the manuscript.

Hanns Wolfgang Rath's commentary on the manuscript identifies it as the earliest version of Mörike's 'Mausfallensprüchlein', first published in the Gedichte of 1838. The child's name 'Agnes', present only in this version (other versions have only 'Das Kind') is that of the eldest daughter of Mörike's close friend Wilhelm Hartlaub. (3)
