PUSHKIN, Alexandr Sergeyevich (1799-1837). Autograph letter signed ('P'), in Russian, to Baron E. Pushkin is eager to read Rosen's preface to his historical drama, Boris Godunov; this, his most famous play, written whilst Pushkin was in exile in southern Russia in the 1820s, appeared in 1831. Rosen's preface in German was published later, in 1833, and again in Russian in 1834. Here Pushkin tells Rosen of his intention to produce an essay for the play's second edition, comprising an explanation of the ideas and principles behind its composition; although a 2nd edition did not appear in Pushkin's lifetime, this introductory essay exists [more to add]. With this letter, Pushkin sent Rosen a poem for inclusion in Altsiona, his 'Feast in Time of Plague', based on John Wilson's tragedy The City of the Plague, but also lets him know that he will be unable to offer any shorter works for publication with Rosen, as he is occupied by the imminent publication of the third edition of his poems. Published in J.T. Shaw's Letters of Alexander Pushkin, II, 534.
