RICHTER, Jean Paul Friedrich (1763-1825). Autograph letter signed ('Jean Paul F. Richter') to the philosopher and bookseller Gottlieb Ernst August Mehmel, Bayreuth, 6 January 1810, 3 pages, 8vo, integral address panel, traces of red wax seal (browned, some staining); with an engraved portrait.
REPROACHES TO A FRIEND FOR NOT PUBLISHING. The letter opens with a friendly New Year's greeting, '1810 schreib' ich heute zum ersten mal -- und es thut mir wol, daß ich es an Sie schreibe', and goes on to reproach Mehmel for his silence towards his friends -- and towards the world in general, reluctant as he is to have his works printed: 'The Lord pardon a silence that he has perhaps, like a higher Pythagorician, imposed'. The letter continues with recommendations of Richter's friend Bergheim, praising his declamatory abilities, linked to his actor's gifts, which make one wish 'like the Nordic gods, to have 20 or 100 more ears'.
