SAINT-JOHN PERSE (pseudonym of Alexis Léger, 1887-1975). Three autograph letters signed (with his other pseudonym 'A[lexis] St Leger Leger') to 'Mademoiselle' [Mimie Godebski], her father 'C[ipa]' Godebski, and her mother, Madame [Ida] Godebski, French Legation, Peking, 10 February 1917, and Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Paris, n.d. [1922] and 26 March [19]23, 11½ pages, 8vo, autograph envelopes (first letter splitting in centre folds).
In a charming and fanciful letter to 'Mademoiselle', written in violet ink and with two lines of verse at the head, Saint-John Perse acknowledges her 'délicieux poème d'Europe', which Satie might have set to music for her, continuing somewhat enigmatically 'Le rossignol de Chine n'est plus: je l'ai mangé en arrivant ... Nouvelles de ce côté du monde? Les jeunes filles, en Orient, ont pris leur parti de devenir de plus en plus jolies, à mesure que leurs jardins deviennent plus français. Dans quelque deux ou trois mille ans les jeunes filles Chinoises auront achevé tout à fait de ressembler à votre amie Mademoiselle Feyet, comme les jeunes filles Japonaises auront achevé tout à fait de vous ressembler'. Back in France, he proposes to visit her mother but is enslaved at the Ministry, and expresses regret to her father at having been unable to attend a soirée because of a sudden summons elsewhere.
A succesful diplomat Saint-John Perse was forced into exile in the US in 1940. Xavier Cyprien (known as 'Cipa') Godebski (1874-1937) was the son of a Polish-born sculptor. 'Cipa' and his family were at the centre of a large circle of artists, writers and musicians; one of the most devoted of their friends was Maurice Ravel who dedicated his Mother Goose Suite to Mimie and her brother.
