An unusual piece, probably dating from the moment when, in April 1836, Stendhal was contemplating applying for the post of consul at Gibraltar. Having rejected the idea a few months before, his mind was changed by a meeting with a consular colleague, 'un bon et aimable attaché qui a passé 15 jours à Gibraltar et qui m'a juré que ledit G[ibraltar] vaut cent Civ[ita Vecchia]' (published letter to his cousin, Romain Colomb, 9 April 1836).
