TURGENEV, Ivan (1818-1883). Autograph letter signed to Prince Orloff, in Russian, rue de Rivoli, 8 February, 1863, 3½ pages, 8vo.
Asking Prince Orloff, then ambassador to Paris, for his help in transferring part of his capital from Russia to France. Writing in the year following the publication of Fathers and Sons, Turgenev explains that he is now spending most of his time in France and so needs funds; his brother, who remains in Russia, will have to offer a guarantee, but Turgenev is still waiting for authorisation from Alexander II which will enable the transaction to take place. [And], autograph letter signed, in French, to 'Madame', Bougival, 22 June, n.y., reluctantly having to decline an invitation as he is going to the spa town of Carlsbad, 'et le samedi 29 Janvier probablement déja avalé mes premiers verres d'eau', one page, 8vo.
