FRENCH LITERATURE -- 20th CENTURY. A collection of autograph letters, comprising:

Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896). Autograph letter signed to M[onsieu]r Fort, Paris, 3 June 1891, thanking him for a benefit performance, 'la représentation que vous avez bien voulu organiser au Vaudeville au bénéfice de Gauguin et du mien', 1¼ pages, small 8vo;

Paul VALÉRY (1871-1945). Two autograph letters signed, to 'Hélène' [Vacaresco] and M. Le Dantec, [1927] and 1933, apologising in the first for not writing 'Mais cette année je suis écrasé de besogne et accablé d'événements', the second expressing reservations about a book referring to him, together 3½ pages, 8vo, envelope;

together with letters by Stéphane Mallarmé (to the composer George Flé, April 1898, responding enthusiastically to his new work: 'poignant, mystérieux, extasié ... ') and Marcel Schwob (n.d., referring disparagingly to the playwright Biornson and recommending Ford's T'is pity she's a whore, 'Mais il faut un poète pour la traduire').

The benefit performance in aid of Gauguin and of Verlaine was held on 21 May 1891. Gauguin's paintings decorated the theatre, Maeterlinck contributed a short play and Mallarmé gave a reading from Poe. (5)
