BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680). Autograph letter signed ('Gia[n]lorenzo Caval[ie]r Bernini') to an 'Eminent[issi]mo e Revere[ndissi]mo S[igno]re', Rome, 3 August 1635, begging the unnamed cardinal to intervene on his behalf as he has not been paid for two years and hopes to give some information to Domenico Albani, who has been paying him an allowance in Bologna, one page, 4to (some ink corrosion, resulting in bleeding of text and a few small holes), later pencil annotations in upper corners.
Throughout the 1630s Bernini had been involved in the restoration of and additions to various buildings, and in 1634 had been working on the high altar at S. Paolo Maggiore in Bologna. This plea for money dates from the period when he was Urban VIII's architect to the fabric of St Peter's, working on the baldacchino from 1623 to 1634. 1635 was also the year that Bernini worked on a marble bust of his mistress Costanza Buonarelli.
Domenico Albani is presumably the elder brother of Francesco Albani (1578-1660), the distinguished artist of the Bolognese school and follower of Carracci. A lawyer, Domenico was entrusted with financial affairs, although not wisely: his death in 1646 revealed that he had dissipated the painter's considerable earnings and left him only debts.
