Veronese writes to his assistant Gandini in Treviso regarding negociations about a property in the country that they were planning to buy in association with his brother Benedetto (also a painter, with whom he frequently collaborated); he firmly draws attention to the fact that they should secure not just the house but the land and its surroundings: 'è bene a eser assoluti patroni per atenderli senza impedimenti a lei dico che [...] in casa mia sara resoluto PATRONE'.

Paolo Caliari was one of the great painters of the Italian Renaissance, known as a supreme colourist in both fresco and oil and for his illusionistic decorations. Born in Verona, he settled in the 1550s in Venice; by 1578 he had produced many of the great decorative scenes in the Doge's palace that would culminate in the Triumph of Venice, begun the following year.
