TELEMANN, Georg Philipp (1681-1767). Autograph manuscript signed ('Telemann'), n.p., n.d., the text for the cantata 'Meinen Jesum will ich lieben', TWV 1:1098, the sections entitled 'Choral', 'Recitat.' (followed by a quotation from 2 Corinthians 5, v.8), 'Arie', 'Recitat.' and concluding with a second 'Choral', 52 lines of verse on 2 pages, 8vo (light browning, remnant of guard). Provenance: Sotheby's, 25 May 2001, lot 214.
A self-taught musical polymath, Telemann is considered the most prolific composer (in surviving oeuvre) in history: his post as the musical director of the five main churches in Hamburg from 1721 until his death entailed him writing two cantatas for each Sunday, in addition to works for feast days, and his other musical activities. In all, he is estimated to have written more than 3,000 works. More famous than his contemporary J.S. Bach in his lifetime, he fell into obscurity in the later 19th Century, and autograph material is rare.
