Carlotta Grisi, the most famous dancer of her day, created the roles of Giselle in 1841 and La Péri, performed at the Paris Opera in 1843, both written for her by Théophile Gautier. The present letter invites a friend to dinner when she will tell him about the malicious things being done to her [presumably by rival dancers]; Giudetta (Carlotta's cousin) offers to pose for Devéria the next day, and Massenet refers to a recommendation for [the singer] Victor Charpentier.
