BABEUF, François-Noël (1760-1797, political agitator and journalist). Autograph letter signed to 'Citoyen Gosse, Accusateur public du Pas de Calais A Arras', Arras, '4 fructidor' n.y. [21 August 1794?], one page, 8vo, address leaf.

An angry letter, denying that he has anything to do with a certain Citizen Gonord who is using his name in connection with the traffic in obtaining visits to [the prison of ] 'les Baudets'. 'Je déclare que je n'ai ni ne veux avoir aucune affaire avec ce particulier, dont la conduite et la relation n'ont nulle affinité avec mes principes ni avec mes goûts'.

Gosse was public prosecutor of the criminal tribunal at Calais. The prison of Les Baudets at Arras was notorious during the Terror as the last place of imprisonment before the guillotine, and the summer of 1794 was marked by the great numbers of the victims. Babeuf, a formidable agitator and journalist, uncompromisingly defended the disgraced leaders of the Terror on the fall of Robespierre and attacked the Thermidoreans. He was himself imprisoned at Arras in October 1794, and again the following February.
