BUONAPARTE, Carlo Maria di (1746-1785, father of Napoleon I). Autograph letter signed to 'Ill[ustrissi]mo Sig[no]ri Sig[no]re P[ad]rone', Livorno, 5 December 1769, one page, 8vo, integral blank.
A sudden departure for the coast is the reason for an enclosure [not present] to the letter, warmly thanking his correspondents again, and announcing that he is leaving for Bastia the next day. Carlo di Buonaparte had briefly been secretary to the leader of the movement for Corsican independence, Pasquale Paoli, but when in 1768 Genoa sold the sovereignty of Corsica to France he took advantage of the French occupation of the island to improve the lot of his family, transforming himself from an obscure lawyer into a representative of the Corsican nobility (which France recognised in 1771).
