CINQ-MARS, Henri Coëffier de Ruzé, Marquis de (1620-1642). Autograph document signed, n.p. [Paris], 1641, on vellum, 2 pages, oblong 4to (210 x 270 mm).

A receipt for his salary as Grand Ecuyer of France in 1641: 'Pour tenir de quitanse de dix mille livres a M[onsieu]r de guengaud Tresorier de lespargne pour mes apointemens de grand Ecuyer de France de l'annee mil six cents et quarante et un'.

Cinq-Mars, son of a close friend of Richelieu, became a 'favourite' of Louis XIII, to whom Richelieu introduced him, and was appointed Grand Ecuyer at the age of nineteen. Despite this he conspired against the cardinal, but the plot was foiled and Louis handed him over to Richelieu; he was executed at Lyon in September 1642.
