THE YOUNG DISRAELI'S FIRST PUBLICATION. The 21-year old author writes concerning his pamphlet touting South American mines, An Inquiry into the Plans, Progress, and Policy of the American Mining Companies: 'I quite agree with you about the advertisement ... It is most fortunate that we delayed the publication of the 3rd edit[ion]. I was quite right about the vessels hovering round the coast & the strong wester of Tuesday has brought in a whole squadron. The news is of the most important & most satisfactory nature, & will, if I get all, which I have no doubt I will, render the pamphlet invaluable.'

The pamphlet may have been invaluable, but the mines were not. The debts Disraeli incurred nearly crushed him. Only with the publication of his first novel, Vivian Grey (1827) did he begin to achieve fame, but nagging debts and poor prospects further stalled his advance, until he finally won a seat in Parliament in 1837.
