D'ESTE, Borso (1413-1471). Letter to Antonio de Sacrato Comiti with autograph signature 'Borsus esten[sis] dux f[e]r[ariae] pp manu propria', Ferrara, 12 March 1471, asking him to guarantee part of a loan, 1 page quarto, address on verso with papered armorial seal of Borso d'Este.

A loan of 12,000 gold ducats has been raised by 'Messer francesco filleto da vinegia per nome di Messer pietro Gueruci'; Borso wants Antonio to act as surety for 2,500 gold ducats of this: 'Volendole fare cautione de parte se questo debito, vi strenzemo per quanto amore devotione e fede vi portati, che vui vogliati farli promessa in nome nostra per la summa di ducati duamillia cinquecento doro ...'.

Borso d'Este, who succeeded his brother in 1450, had his territories of Modena and Reggio raised to duchies in 1452 and Ferrara in 1471. He spent lavishly to give Ferrara a leading political and cultural role, employing some of the most original artists and musicians of the Italian Renaissance. Like most rulers, Borso, despite his wealth, was often short of ready money and had to rely on loans.
