FRANCIS DE SALES, Saint (1567-1622). Autograph letter signed ('Franc[oi]s E[veque] de Geneve') to 'madame la premiere presidente de savoie' [Madame Brulart], Annecy, 28 November 1612, 17 lines written in brown ink on one page, 4to, address panel, papered seal, contemporary docket (slightly browned, light offsetting of ink, occasional tiny holes, slight wear in lower horizontal fold), window-mounted.
A request to be informed of the arrival in Chambéry of Monsieur Dalufin [?], and whether the efforts of Father Timothy to establish an Ursuline institute there will succeed. '[C]e seron sans doute un grand bien, pour ces pauvres petites filles qui souvent sous les caresses de leurs meres aprennent beaucoup de vanites qui croissent avec elles et plus qu[e] elles'. He regrets that he did not see the Count and Countess of St Alban the previous day when they were in Annecy.
Francis de Sales, nobleman and ecclesiastic, was ordained in 1593 and at first appointed to bring back to the Catholic fold the Calvinists in his native Savoy. The success of his mission led to his appointment in 1602 as bishop of Geneva and in 1665 he was canonised. Madame Brulart, wife of the president of the Parliament, was among his regular correspondents.
