MITTERMAIER, Carl Joseph Anton (1787-1867, German politician). Series of eleven autograph letters signed ('Mittermaier') to Carlo Peri, superintendent of jails in Tuscany, Heidelberg, 3 August 1862 - 16 November 1868, in Italian, 35 pages, 8vo, two envelopes, with a related letter by Mittermaier's grandson, 'de Krafft', 24 September 1862, in French; [with] copy manuscript signed, with a number of autograph emendations, of a paper on penal reform, 'Der neueste Stand der Frage über Verbesserung der Gefängnisse nach den Ergebnissen der Leistungen der Wissenschaft, der Gesetzgebung und nach den Erfahrungen', n.d. [1862] in German, 17 pages, 4to, on bifolia.
ON PRISON REFORM: Mittermaier's letters evince his interest in prison reform worldwide, especially in terms of quality of air and other living conditions, forced labour, the use of isolation, etc, with constant reference to examples from England, the United States and elsewhere; the letters are marked by his warm relationship with the recipient. The paper on prison reform is referred to in a letter of 10 August 1862 as being one he delivered at a congress in London. (12)
